* Why Samosata

Hard science and engineering both begin with a concept or idea. The posts in this blog show concepts and ideas from technology to governance and funding leading to a feasible concept for success in mans near future attempts at lunar and planetary colonialism.

To better understand the full scope of the concepts being presented, go to the ARCHIVE menu in the top left and read the posts in order by date. New posts are published quite regularly so check back often.

Here is why this site is called lsamosata.

There is more to this blog site than just concepts and ideas as the blogs name is historical in nature and bears the name of one of the earliest known science fiction writers. His story about interplanetary travel entitled "A true Story" was written almost one thousand eight hundred years ago and is still available today. The author was Lucien of Samosata (lsamosata)

It is the earliest known work of fiction to include travel to outer space, alien lifeforms, and interplanetary warfare. It has been described as "the first known text that could be called science fiction". However, the work does not fit into typical literary genres: its multilayered plot and its characters have been interpreted as belonging to science fiction, fantasy, satire or parody, and have been the subjects of scholarly debate.

So, why was it important to name this site for a science fiction writer?

Simply put, science fiction writers are the precursors of invention leading to thoughts and considerations which lead to science and technology and engineering that lead to advances in our human journey.

From Jules Verne Nautilus to Star Treks communicators, science fiction has had a tremendous impact on our technological developments and engineering for many centuries, and perhaps longer. Science fiction writers provide us with a glimpse of "what if" and then proceed to design machines and worlds that spark our imagination.

Captain Samantha Cristoforetti, an Italian European Space Agency astronaut, former Italian Air Force pilot and engineer and a modern day astronaut, wore a Star Trek uniform on the ISS.

Cristoforetti let her Trekkie side out during her space mission. Cristoforetti was in space when Star Trek star Leonard Nimoy died in 2015. Cristoferetti tweeted out a photo of herself in space wearing a Starfleet badge and giving the Vulcan salute. "'Of all the souls I have encountered.. his was the most human,'" she tweeted, borrowing a famous Star Trek line, this one from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. "Thx @TheRealNimoy for bringing Spock to life for us."[1]

Another Star Trek inspired invention is the cell phone.

Martin Cooper led the team at Motorola that developed the world’s first handheld mobile phone. He has said that watching Captain Kirk using his communicator on the television show Star Trek inspired him with a stunning idea – to develop a handheld mobile phone.  He and his team took only 90 days in 1973 to create the first portable cellular 800 MHz phone prototype.

What you will find in this blog is not written as science fiction but as a presentation of concepts and considerations related to interplanetary colonialism. Perhaps some of what is written here will pass from thought to reality.
