Introduction

No sitting member of any government today has been involved in a colonization effort. No person alive today has come to their current place of residence through a desire to become a colonist. The result of these two statements is that no person alive has ever experienced the challenges of building a new society in a new colony.

The last great period of colonization occurred somewhere in the late 1800’s to early 1900s’s with decolonization beginning to occur around the end of WWII.[1]

Exploration, expansionism, imperialism and capitalism have long been the usual impetus for colonial efforts with a few related to the desire to escape an existing empire. Colonialism usually involves the destruction or subjugation of the original culture and peoples through conflict and once conquered, the native population must continually be managed, usually through harsh means.

Expansionism is similar but usually between more equal rivals on the battlefield.

A common byproduct of colonialism and expansionism is revolution. At some future point the new colony or territory will rebel against their distant masters. Governments that install puppet rulers in their newly claimed territories often face the inevitable revolutionary wars and eventual loss of what they had claimed.[2]

When considering interplanetary or lunar colonization / expansionism, the consequences are likely to be the same as here on Earth, as our history is a window on our future. Any planetary or Lunar colony ruled or governed by Earth based entities (Government or business) will experience revolution.

A new IPC (Interplanetary colony) society developing through these types of colonial efforts will face two distinct additional challenges no colonial society has ever faced before. The first is a climate not just hostile to human life, but 100% deadly. The secondary issue with interplanetary or lunar colonization is how it affects existing Earth based societies and cultures. Never before has humanity had to face the realities of our species moving out into space and this must be a consideration when planning and developing IPC’s.
