Architectural
We have all seen them, luxury apartments and living conditions in a space colony somewhere with beautiful vistas of space ports and alien landscapes. We have seen soaring interiors and geodesic domes housing forests of greenery and farms that set the imagination free to wonder.
The reality of colonial architecture for decades to come will look more like the interior of a box than a soaring cathedral. Colonists will be lucky to see anything more than a bleak wall staring back at them. It will be more like the interior of an ocean going freighter than a luxury liner.
Fanciful technologies and video wall panels would be replaced by the interior of a washroom at your local garage with very little room for artful or esthetic interruption. If someone wishes to go to a colony their pre-conceived perceptions of what it is going to be like must be firmly grounded, no flights of fancy. A look at any image of the interior of the ISS will provide a good indication of the initial colonial living conditions.
Interior designs such as the one shown below would be third or fourth generation colonial modules. Initial colonial buildings will be utilitarian and bleak by normal standards
