The construction of an earth based colony would be a proving ground for the much more dangerous missions of exploration and colonialism.

Becoming Martian would include shedding the culture and human nature that we have developed over millennia in an open air environment as they will not easily translate into a closed environment.

Martian colonialism is about the planting of the human seed, not the carrying of our earth bound culture to another planet.
