Colonization Example

Colonial efforts on Earth that did not involve expansionism or imperialism started with exploration that was followed by business development and then followed by general population expansion. A typical example of this colonial model would be the fur trade in North America.

The fur trade began in the 1600s in what is now Canada. It continued for more than 250 years with Europeans trading with Indigenous people for beaver pelts with the demand for felt hats in Europe driving this business. The fur trade was one of the main reasons that Europeans explored and colonized Canada.[1]

For IPC development to be successful in a hostile environment it will need to occur in three phases. The first will be the establishment of scientific research / exploration stations and their support structures. (Using Landers) The second will be business and development related resource extraction for infrastructure construction. (Using business and government resources and star ships) The third will be population expansion based on work force requirements. (Continued exploration, resource extraction and construction) In the later stages of this work force expansion, families will be brought with the workers leading to the greatest changes in societal and cultural norms. It is this last group that will be considered as true colonists

A potential fourth and final phase of colonization could be defined as occurring after a stable environment has been achieved. This is the phase where just surviving gives way to a thriving colonial culture and society.
