Backup Redundancy

Have a backup plan for your backup plan

The first thing to fail in an emergency is communications. The first response to an emergency is confusion. The first thing you will realize about any emergency situation is that the plan is either too complex to quickly source the resolution or that the plan does not cover the current emergency in a concise manner.

The solution to these realities is to train more than one person in the appropriate response. Not everyone reacts to a situation the same way another person might and if time is critical, two heads are better than one.

The second solution is to have a redundant plan that addresses the situation in an entirely different way.  A particular sequence of recovery steps may not work as planned so additional methods of addressing the same situation are important.

None of this is new in the aerospace industry, until you forget something, or do not extrapolate the risk of failure far enough.

The continuity portion of recovery planning is used to identify the risks to be addressed during design, and precedes the planning for recovery.
