Multi-Use Concept
I have previously presented two design concepts utilizing a single panel format. The vaulted, flat packable construction modules, and the J-Pod supply units. Shown below is a quick summary of the advantages to combining both designs into one construction / lift platform.
Vaulted Flat Packable Panels:
- Standardized construction size based on:
- Interior rocket dimensions
- Manual lift capabilities on other celestial bodies
- Variable use panel configurations
- Door panels
- Walls panels
- Solar Energy Panels
- Window panels
- Lightweight
- No heavy lift machinery required during construction assembly
- 4 - 6 crew should be able to easily lift the panels during construction
- Flat packable utilizing storage bay space to its fullest
J-Pod Advantages:
- J-Pods are constructed to same dimensions as the vaulted panel for a specific celestial body
- Once emptied of supplies, every supply run automatically becomes more construction panels by disassembling the J-Pods and utilizing the panels for habitat or other building constructions
- Removing the J-pods from the rocket platform reduces re-launch weight when the supply vehicle launches on the return voyage to Earth.
Combined Advantages:
- One interplanetary run (Earth to the moon for example) could easily carry crew, supplies, multipurpose construction panels and a return vehicle platform eliminating the need for a lander rocket platform to remain attached to the habitat for the duration.
- Rotation crews would arrive and depart with each resupply run reducing the number of rocket platforms required.
- The initial crew would live in the rocket platform until the first habitats were constructed.
- Subsequent crews would be able to immediately disembark to the already constructed habitats.
- Both crews would off-load the J-Pods and utilize the empty pods to construct more buildings / storage units.
- Once completed, the first crew would be rotated Earthside.
- For interplanetary flights farther than the moon the re-supply vehicle design would be fully utilized for supply only. Any crew changes or additions would be transported using a purpose built vehicle such as the SpaceX Starship design and flat packables, rather than J-Pods.
- The resupply vehicles would normally be a smaller platform than the Starship design.
